I figure hit points can also be an abstraction of “wearing down” your opponents defenses. It’s easier to score a killing blow when you’ve been fighting someone for half an hour and they’re tired. That isn’t really abstracted elsewhere in DnD. Hit points can just be a measurement of your movement towards defeat.
