Boxed Culture: A Tribute to Star Wars

A Tribute to Star Wars

When Fantasy Flight Games obtain the ability to make Star Wars games everyone was excited. Not only was their favorite franchise getting more games made but a company known for making good games was at the helm of the endeavor. As a tribute to the new Star Wars movie coming out I wanted to take some time to look at a few of the games that make me excited to be a fan.

x-wing minis

Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game

Starting off this rodeo is the X-Wing Miniatures game. In this fantastic game, each player takes a squad of beautifully painted star-fighters from the Star Wars films and battles them until one person is left standing! I would not be crazy if I were to say this game does a fantastic job of making the players feel like they are dog fighting the ships from the classic Star Wars films. Each ship has its pros and cons and figuring them out is half the fun of the game. Squad building is what I am talking about folks, leading a swarm of Tie Fighters to do battle with Luke and Biggs and the rest of Red Squadron is enormous amounts of fun. I mentioned this earlier but ever mini you buy for this game is not only pre-painted, but also comes with new pilot and upgrade cards and a fancy maneuver dial!

Star-Wars-Edge-of-the-Empire-Beginner-Game

Star Wars: Edge of the Empire

The second game is of a type I don’t talk about often here, an RPG. The Edge of the Empire RPG was FFG released in 2012 and is set in the Galactic Empire Era. (the time period of the classic Star Wars films for those who are not familiar with the naming). In this game, players build their characters using many of the famous Star Wars races and character archetypes like smuggler, pilot, and bounty hunter. Then they must face epic challenges trying to survive the Star Wars universe. This game also uses a fancy new dice system that has you collect pools of colorful dice before each roll. Each die either helps you succeed or makes it harder. The best part about this game is that you don’t need a spreadsheet to play it! Yes, that is a Pathfinder and Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 burn…I went there. The dice rolling helps the Game Master tell a better story and that makes each session awesome.

Star Wars Rebellion

Star Wars: Rebellion

The last game I want to talk about is Star Wars: Rebellion. This games is slated for release in early 2016 and it looks crazy good. It is a game that lets players control the fate of the universe as if they control he two waring factions in the classic era movies, The Galactic Empire and the Rebellion. Two players fighting for the galaxy, one to claim it under its fist and the other to liberate it. It looks like a fantastically huge game. With 150 miniatures and hundreds of other pieces and components the game aims to be a wonderful 10,000 lb. turtle, a huge epic game, like Twilight Imperium. If you like huge games, this is the Star Wars game you should be excited for. Each piece of news that comes out for this game makes me more and more excited to by it!

Well there you have a folks, a quick look at a few of the Star Wars games I like or am excited for. If you have any other you like add them in the comments! thanks for reading. See ya next time.
